Access to safe, reliable, and affordable transportation is something most people take for granted. Many people are able walk out of their home and hop into their car parked in the driveway. Others walk a few blocks to the nearest bus stop and use public transit to get to their destination. These options simply are not available to many senior and disabled residents living in our communities. Limited financial resources, physical infirmities, or the lack of public transportation in rural areas are barriers which limit the mobility options of seniors and the disabled. SCM Elderbus helps fill this void by providing a vital transportation link to help meet the everyday needs of the people we serve.
SCM Elderbus is a private non-profit 501 (c) 3 organization. Incorporated in 1974, the Company initially provided transportation to medical appointments for senior residents of a single community. Under the auspices of the Worcester Regional Transit Authority, today the organization provides transportation services to seniors and the disabled residing in twenty-one communities in central Massachusetts . And it's not just for transportation to and from medical appointments. Shopping, banking, trips to the local pharmacy, work related trips, or simply a ride to the local coffee shop to meet with friends are just a few of the reasons people use Elderbus. Whatever your transportation needs, we can help.
Using the service could not be easier. All residents age 60 and over, as well as the disabled, are eligible for the service. Simply give us a call to reserve your ride, let us know where and what time you would like to be picked up (your home for example), and where you would like to be dropped off. Your return trip works the same way, and is scheduled during your initial call to our office. Again, just let us know what time you would like to be picked up, and we will return you to your home destination. Our service is available Monday through Friday, from 8:30am - 4:00pm for rides within your community. Out-of-town medical transportation is provided for each of the twenty-one communities we serve three days per week (see Service Area for specific details by town). The cost of the service is extremely affordable. Each in-town trip is $1.25 (one way). Out-of-town trips cost an additional $0.25 for each town beyond the one you reside in. For example, a trip to the town next door would be $1.50, two towns over $1.75, etc.
